Course Objectives

The course is a comprehensive clinical and applied analysis for Hand and Upper Extremity Therapists. Course participants will have the opportunity to reinforce knowledge for evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention and outcomes while discussing current topics and developments in research. The unique component to this course will include a cadaver lab experience following evaluation procedures, signs and symptoms, of common diagnoses. The hands on approach for this course will enhance the participants’ knowledge while continuing the commitment to the furtherance of evidence based practice in therapy.

Course Faculty

Greg Mangione, PA-C, is currently the lead upper extremity orthopedic physician assistant with Palmetto Health Orthopedics in Columbia, SC. In addition, he is a clinical assistant professor with the University of South Carolina. He has dual Bachelor of Science degrees in business management and physician assistant studies, which were completed at Cameron University and the University of Nebraska, respectively. Following these degrees, he completed his Master of Physician Assistant Studies in 2001 from the University of Nebraska and an orthopedic physician assistant fellowship at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. He was with the United States Air Force for over 20 years prior to beginning his role as a practicing physician Assistant, which he has held for over 15 years. He has a vast knowledge of physical therapy applications and fracture prevention in athletes, and also notes speaking at numerous invited guest lectures with multiple healthcare organizations.

 

Dr. Jay Patel is currently the research project manager with Palmetto Health Research Compliance. He completed a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical sciences at Auburn University. In addition, he holds a Master of Science degree in exercise science and in 2013 completes his doctoral degree in kinesiology with specialization in anatomy and biomechanics. Furthermore, Dr. Patel holds multiple faculty appointments with the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina in the fields of anatomy and biomechanics of human movement. He has experience teaching gross anatomy labs for graduate students, as well as several invited guest lectures in the field of anatomy. In addition, he has authored dozens of articles and books in the field of anatomy, sports biomechanics and orthopedics. He has patented batting gloves designed for reducing muscular insufficiency with the American College of Sports Medicine and National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Direction to course: (from the south) I-26 West to I-385 North, Exit at Roper Mountain Road, Turn Right on Roper Mountain, Immediate Left on to Frontage Road, Frontage Road, cross Pelham Road. Patewood is on the left after the intersection in Building C; do not park in Garage. Morning lecture on 2nd floor. Afternoon Lab on 4th floor.
